In 2015, Concern Worldwide conducted a study in Zambia to inform how agricultural interventions based on conservation agriculture practices can integrate nutrition considerations. The study engaged stakeholders to identify opportunities for using conservation agriculture to improve household diets (and thus contribute to improved nutrition) and advance the situation for women. This report summarizes the findings of the study and provides recommendations on how to improve nutrition outcomes within conservation agriculture.

Extension advisory services support smallholders to improve the productivity and efficiency of their farms and make business decisions. The smallholders and households addressed by these services are also often food insecure and suffer chronic or acute forms of malnutrition, which affects the physical and cognitive growth of children and reduces productivity. It helps them prioritize a short list of crops to promote for the household’s main agricultural plot in a project and/or geographic area in order to meet both agriculture and nutrition priorities. The tool is designed for agriculture and nutrition staff involved with planning and/or implementing development programs funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
