USAID Nutrition Resource Hub
Since 2020, USAID Advancing Nutrition has been applying a systems-oriented approach to nutrition programming in Kenya. Our multi-sectoral program strengthened government capacity to improve the health of populations at risk of nutritional deficiencies in three Kenyan counties (subnational)—Kakamega, Kisumu, and Kitui. The program sought to improve stakeholder collaboration for nutrition planning, resource allocation, and coordination by connecting national and local government, international agency, civil society organization, and community partners.

Local organizations play a crucial role in improving development outcomes, including nutrition, due to their context-specific knowledge and skills, resources, and networks. We pursued a learning agenda to collect lessons learned from the capacity strengthening support provided to local organizations working in nutrition to help close evidence gaps around what strategies work best to deliver on local priorities.

Findings show that the application of private sector techniques requires strengthened capacity and donor support. To successfully generate demand for healthy foods, nutrition programs should consider prioritizing target behaviors, strengthening benefit statements and value propositions for nutritious foods, using branding, and engaging with creative agencies.
