Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements are a highly cost-effective intervention to reduce relative risk of mortality, severe wasting and stunting, iron deficiency anemia, and developmental delay between 6 and 23 months of age. Such supplements should be considered an essential nutrition intervention but should be integrated into other interventions to improve child survival, nutrition, and development. Authors recommend a simplified calculation method for mixed dishes that allows for disaggregating recipe data to the ingredient level. Identifying ingredient proportions requires collecting or estimating the quantity of each ingredient used and the amount in the prepared mixed dish. Survey planners must explore the pros and cons of collecting standard or nonstandard recipe data.

Modeling found that social and behavior change (SBC) interventions for breastfeeding and complementary feeding are highly cost-effective to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with undernutrition, especially in areas with higher mortality. Future research should explore social norms around breastfeeding and complementary feeding and the cost-effectiveness of SBC for women’s nutrition.
