In this study, community health workers (CHWs), CHW supervisors, community representatives, and others in South Africa reported that services were comprehensive but that inadequate training, supervision, and mentoring as well as socio-economic issues impacted service effectiveness. A multidisciplinary approach to care has improved CHW knowledge and skills but more funding for training, supervision, supplies, and salaries is critical.

What is USAID Nawiri?
Implemented in partnership with the Government of Kenya in Marsabit, Isiolo, Samburu, and Turkana Counties, the USAID Nawiri program is a five-year initiative funded by the USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) to sustainably reduce persistent acute malnutrition in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). USAID Nawiri aims to help resolve the underlying causes of acute malnutrition through this integrated, multi-sectoral resilience-strengthening program that leverages ongoing emergency and development activities.

The Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance Project (FANTA) and the Uganda Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development worked together to develop a user-friendly package of materials to strengthen the capacity of community development officers and mobilizers to improve food and nutrition security within communities in Uganda.
Use the USAID Nawiri Framework to browse evidence of the drivers of and solutions to addressing persistent acute malnutrition in the Kenya arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). The learning briefs and full reports within the framework present information as it relates to information studied by USAID Nawiri.

USAID Advancing Nutrition Tanzania has been working with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Tanzania Food and Nutrition Center (TFNC) to provide technical support and strengthen coordination.
