Anemia Toolkit

This review presents evidence on the impact on maternal mortality of iron–folic acid supplementation from observational studies that were analyzed for the Global Burden of Disease analysis in 2004, and summarizes the evidence from other reviews on this topic.
Anemia Toolkit

This policy brief is aimed at the second of the six global nutrition targets for 2025: a 50 percent reduction of anemia in women of reproductive age. The brief aims to increase attention to, investment in, and action for a set of cost-effective interventions and policies that can help member states and their partners in reducing rates of anemia among women of reproductive age.

This systematic review assesses the associations between maternal anemia adverse birth and health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. The review synthesizes evidence from 29 studies. Findings indicate that more than 40 percent of women experienced anemia during pregnancy in low- and middle-income countries and that 12 percent of low birthweight cases, 19 percent of preterm births, and 18 percent of perinatal mortality in the studied regions were attributable to maternal anemia.

This WHO guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on daily iron supplementation in infants and children, as a public-health intervention for the prevention of anemia and iron deficiency. The recommendation in this guideline is intended for a wide audience, including policy-makers, their expert advisers, and technical and programme staff at government institutions and organizations involved in the design, implementation and scaling-up of programmes for anemia prevention and control, and in nutrition actions for public health.

Anemia Toolkit

This systematic review synthesizes evidence on the effects of point‐of‐use fortification of foods with iron‐containing micronutrient powders alone, versus in combination with other vitamins and minerals, on nutrition, health, and development among children of preschool and school age, compared with no intervention, a placebo, or iron‐containing supplements.
Anemia Toolkit

This book chapter provides a comprehensive review of the literature linking iron deficiency to disability and death, including child mortality, perinatal mortality, maternal mortality, and mild mental retardation outcomes. The authors suggest that iron deficiency anemia contributes substantially to global death and disability, with a great majority of this disease burden deriving from anemia in pregnancy and early childhood and borne by women and children in Asia and Africa.
Anemia Toolkit

This review presents current global estimates of common inherited hemoglobin disorders such as sickle cell anemia and ß-thalassemia, and highlights the lack of evidence and the need for further research and collaboration in this area.
Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Resource Review

Despite progress in health over the years in Cambodia, the number of malnourished children remains high, which may be associated in part with poor water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices. To address gaps in knowledge on the association between WASH practices and the nutritional status of children, this study analyzed the relationship between WASH child-sensitive composite scores and the wasting child anthropometry indicators.
