In close collaboration with caregivers, health providers, programmers, and policymakers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Breakthrough ACTION and USAID Advancing Nutrition used behavioral design to develop solutions that support families so they can continue feeding their young children during periods of illness and feed children more in the two weeks following illness.

Qualitative research, informed by behavioral science, helps to explain why young children do not receive enough food and breastmilk during and after illness to recover and grow well. The perspectives, experiences, and challenges shared by caregivers, health workers, and others in South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) describe the behavioral factors that stand in the way of optimal complementary feeding during and after illness.

The U.S. Government's Global Food Security Strategy presents an integrated approach to combating the root causes of hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. Project Leadership

Marily Knieriemen has an undergraduate degree in French and a master’s degree in international development administration. She taught English as a Foreign Language as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon and as a Second Language to refugees in Minnesota before starting her career in international development. She has worked with several international NGOs (Helen Keller International, CARE, Lutheran World Relief, Mercy Corps, and SNV) and the U.S. Peace Corps. Her experience includes work in nine countries of Africa, with much of that time in the Sahel-including 16 years in Niger.

(JSI), and a diverse group of experienced partners. Launched in September 2018, USAID Advancing Nutrition implements and provides technical support to nutrition interventions across sectors and disciplines for USAID and its partners. The project’s multi-sectoral approach draws together global nutrition experience to design, implement and evaluate programs that address the root causes of malnutrition.

The Growth Monitoring and Promotion (GMP) Expert Consultation was hosted virtually from April 20–21, 2022 by USAID and USAID Advancing Nutrition in collaboration with the Global Financing Facility, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization. The consultation provided a forum to discuss opportunities for strengthening GMP, particularly as an important delivery platform for improving child nutrition, health, and development outcomes, and identifying priorities for future research and programming.
