Operationalizing Multi-sectoral Coordination and Collaboration for Improved Nutrition
Publication Date:
Reducing undernutrition requires a commitment from multiple sectors, yet documentation on how to collaborate across sectors to reach global goals is scant. Through a three-country assessment and literature review, the Strengthening Partnerships, Results, and Innovations in Nutrition Globally (SPRING) project investigated approaches to multi-sectoral collaboration for nutrition.
In 2015, USAID’s multi-sectoral nutrition project, Strengthening Partnerships, Results, and Innovations in Nutrition Globally (SPRING), developed a framework for applying systems thinking to improve nutrition. The framework includes seven cross-cutting factors:
According to the 2012 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), 18 percent of children in the Kyrgyz Republic under the age of five are stunted, while 43 percent of children ages six to 59 months and 35 percent of women of reproductive age are anemic.

Facilitator's Guide for Conducting Mother-to-Mother Support Groups (Ghana)
Publication Date:
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
The Strengthening Partnerships, Results, and Innovations in Nutrition Globally (SPRING) project worked in collaboration with local district assemblies and institutions like the Ghana Health Service, the Ministry of Food and Agricultural, and the Environmental Health Unit, among others, in three broad areas.
Evidence shows that that people can change their behaviors to improve nutrition outcomes, especially when the environment in which they live and work supports those changes. SPRING took a behavior-centered approach to all of their work to reduce stunting and anemia, meaning that from the beginning of any intervention, they had clear behavior change goals in mind.
