Comparative Analysis of Shock Response Programs and Their Impacts on Resilience in Zimbabwe

In this study, researchers analyzed approaches used by World Vision Zimbabwe and partners (WVZP) to strengthen resilience against drought, climate change, and other climatic shocks that exert pressure on Zimbabwe’s economy, which relies heavily on rain-fed agriculture. Qualitative methods involved focus group discussions with communities and government and development partner officials.
This brief focuses on the pathway from agricultural income to better diets, health, and nutrition. However, all of the pathways are interrelated. Agricultural activities typically affect more than one pathway and interact with the enabling environment that includes policies, the natural resource base, and cultural practices, among other factors.
Women’s Empowerment, Food Security and Nutrition of Pastoral Communities in Tanzania

Scholars increasingly point to women’s empowerment as a means to enhance food security and nutrition; however, little is understood about the mechanisms that drive these relationships. This analysis uses a mixed methods approach to examine these interactions in Tanzanian pastoral communities.

To explore the link between women’s empowerment and improved child nutrition, this study evaluated the outcomes of a nutrition- and gender-sensitive agriculture program in Burkina Faso. The results provide the first experimental evidence that efforts to increase women’s empowerment can lead to improved child nutrition.
Development of the Project-Level Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (Pro-WEAI)

Researchers recently adapted the widely used Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) to develop a measurement tool that can help agricultural development projects better monitor and measure their impact. The tool restructures and adds indicators to measure project impact across groups and over time.
Globally, women often face barriers to agricultural supply chains. IDH developed this toolkit to help programmers integrate gender into their supply chain approaches by changing business practices, improving sector governance, and increasing field-level sustainability.

Tool for Framing a Discussion Between Nutrition and Agriculture Specialists

This tool aims to facilitate agreement between agriculture specialists and nutrition specialists as they jointly design project interventions aimed at improving nutrition for vulnerable women and children under age 2.
Extension advisory services support smallholders to improve the productivity and efficiency of their farms and make business decisions. The smallholders and households addressed by these services are also often food insecure and suffer chronic or acute forms of malnutrition, which affects the physical and cognitive growth of children and reduces productivity.
Potential for Nutrition-Sensitive Conservation Agriculture in Zambia
