Mozambique has prioritized the reduction of chronic malnutrition for over 10 years using international and national strategies and policy instruments such as the Millennium Development Goals (MGDs) 2015 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, the Multi-sectoral Action Plan for the Reduction of Chronic Malnutrition (PAMRDC), and the Food Security and Nutrition Strategies (ESAN I, II, and III), recognizing that the factors contributing to chronic malnutrition are complex and multi-faceted. Targets and strategies were initially influenced and aligned with the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement, which united multi-lateral and bilateral agencies, civil society, the private sector, researchers, and other partners to support collective action toward a world free from all forms of malnutrition by 2030. The Government of the Republic of Mozambique (GRM), a signatory to the SUN since 2011, established strategies in support of MDGs/SDGs for the reduction of poverty, hunger, and child and maternal mortality, including for improvements in food security and nutrition. Additionally, the Ministry of Health (MISAU), with support from development partners, developed several tools for community-based and health facility (HF) partners to classify and treat acute malnutrition, change food consumption and feeding practices, and adopt improved nutrition-related health behaviors.
