Documents included in this toolkit have been identified by members of the USAID Advancing Nutrition Anemia Task Force. The Anemia Task Force members are experts in fields of study related to various aspects of anemia - biology, its assessment, interventions to reduce its burden, and the enabling environment that influences anemia policies and programs. The included resources have been selected for their utility in understanding anemia and relevant to actions that can be taken to reduce it.

This toolkit will be updated on a rolling basis – for inquiries or suggestions for resources to add, please contact info@advancingnutrition.org.

Anemia Briefs
Brief published by USAID Advancing Nutrition in
The USAID Advancing Nutrition Anemia Task force, a group of leading experts in anemia research and programming, has developed a report that addresses the complex "ecology" of anemia. We recommend an ecological approach to understand anemia, where we can utilize our knowledge of systems biology to suggest sensitive and specific assessment…
Exploring the Anemia Ecology: A New Approach to an Old Problem Webinar
Webinar published by USAID Advancing Nutrition in
The USAID Advancing Nutrition Anemia Task Force, a multi-disciplinary panel of experts, developed a comprehensive report on anemia that draws from both sentinel and emerging data to help address this gap. The task force recognized that anemia represents an “ecology” (i.e., a complex system interacting with its internal/biological and external/…
Factors Associated with Anaemia in a Nationally Representative Sample of Nonpregnant Women of Reproductive Age in Nepal
Literature Review published by Matern Child Nutr in
This secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the 2016 Nepal National Micronutrient Status Survey evaluates the factors associated with anemia, derived from altitude- and smoking-adjusted hemoglobin concentration values, among nationally representative sample of nonpregnant women 15– 49 years.
Preconception Risk Assessment for Thalassaemia, Sickle Cell Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, and Tay‐Sachs Disease
Systematic Review published by Cochrane Library in
This study assess the effectiveness of systematic preconception genetic risk assessment to improve reproductive outcomes in women and their partners who are both identified as carriers of thalassemia, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis and Tay‐Sachs disease in healthcare settings, when compared to usual care.
Perspective: Nutritional Status as a Biological Variable (NABV): Integrating Nutrition Science into Basic and Clinical Research and Care
Journal Article published by Adv Nutr in
The authors of this editorial call for a study of nutritional status as a biological variable, which includes an appreciation that nutritional status is: 1) not limited to dietary exposure; 2) intimately and inextricably involved in all aspects of human health promotion, disease prevention, and treatment; and 3) both an input and an outcome of…
