Information retention was higher when delivered by someone lower in the ethnic hierarchy while individual contributions to group-owned kitchen gardens increased more when training was delivered by those higher in the hierarchy. Education, group cohesion, and perceived trainer ability also impacted knowledge and contributions. Program staff should consider these factors to achieve greater success.

Collaborative multi-sectoral nutrition initiatives include establishing food security and nutrition planning guidelines; conducting training of trainers courses delivering nutrition-specific activities to adolescent girls, pregnant women, and women of reproductive age; and supporting governments to develop strategies and tools for nutrition services. Barriers to using micronutrient powder (MNP) include previous experiences with health care providers, inconvenient access to MNP, and the absence of reminders to provide MNP. Providing culturally relevant messaging and encouraging changes to feeding routines can lower barriers. Health care provider training should encourage positive interpersonal interactions when initiating MNP. The abstract is available in Spanish.

Cesarean deliveries are associated with a significant delay in initiating breastfeeding (BF) while immediate skin-to-skin contact is associated with earlier initiation. Authors recommend adopting facility-based policies and programs to encourage early BF and skin-to-skin practices, providing health care worker training opportunities to build awareness of these practices, and targeting cesarean deliveries.

Additional recommendations include strengthening workforce early childhood care and development competencies through pre- and in-service trainings and services; providing support to children with disabilities and their families; and providing tools and processes to aid in identification, support, and referrals of caregivers’ mental health issues.
