Despite the many health benefits of breastfeeding for women and children, around the world, only 44% of infants are breastfed exclusively for six months. Social support is a key factor in achieving high rates of breastfeeding, whether that is through partners, grandmothers, mother-in-laws, or employers. Altrena Mukuria, Dr.P.H., is an expert in the field of nutrition and a breastfeeding champion with 40 years of experience working in diverse contexts. As a specialist in infant and young child nutrition, Dr. Mukuria welcomed the opportunity to support her own daughter through the experience of breastfeeding her newborn son. As part of World Breastfeeding Week 2020, her experience was published by La Leche League, an organization whose mission is to promote breastfeeding and support mothers. Altrena’s blog explores both the joys and challenges of breastfeeding and the lessons learned. Having published professionally about infant feeding support (https://www.ghspjournal.org/content/4/1/55), here she reflects on her own experiences as a breastfeeding mother and on what it takes to support a breastfeeding mother.
