On April 25-26, 2019, USAID Advancing Nutrition staff participated in the Global Nutrition Symposium on Improving Human Nutrition and Incomes through Effective Livestock Research and Extension Partnerships in Kathmandu, Nepal, hosted by the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems.  Technical Advisor Sarah McClung shared how livestock transfer programs can empower women and improve nutrition, drawing on lessons from USAID | Yaajeende, implemented by USAID Advancing Nutrition partner NCBA-CLUSA in Senegal. USAID Advancing Nutrition recommends linking livestock transfer programs to behavior change initiatives to help participants prioritize nutrition and establish strategies for diversifying family diets through consumption and income.

Supporting its conclusions through a review of USAID-funded development activities that utilized some form of a small livestock transfer activity, McClung presented a poster (PDF, 1.2 MB) highlighting project design and implementation challenges and opportunities. The authors found that, in many cases, nutrition was not formally included in activity results frameworks, which made it difficult to meaningfully quantify any improvement in the nutrition of beneficiaries.
