The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Advancing Nutrition project is the Agency’s flagship nutrition project, led by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI), and a diverse group of experienced partners. Launched in September 2018, USAID Advancing Nutrition implements and provides technical support to nutrition interventions across sectors and disciplines for USAID and its partners. The project’s multi-sectoral approach draws together global nutrition experience to design, implement, and evaluate programs that address the root causes of malnutrition. The Communication Officer sits on the Knowledge Management Team and supports efforts to disseminate the project’s work to ensure USAID Advancing Nutrition’s publications, technical resources, and events are widely shared across the global nutrition and broader international development communities. They will work under the direction of the Knowledge Management Director and liaise with the current Communication Officer to identify opportunities to highlight project successes, share technical tools, and support efforts to document our country work through the project website, social media, and other platforms. The Communication Officer will oversee the project’s social media accounts and work with team members from across the project to develop content for each platform. The Communication Officer will also support communication activities, working closely with Knowledge Management and Country Programs Teams, including drafting, repurposing, and sourcing content for the project’s communication platforms. This position is based in Arlington, VA. The salary range for this position is $55,125 - $73,946.

Responsibilities
The Communication Officer will:
- Manage USAID Advancing Nutrition’s social media accounts, working in close coordination with technical teams to ensure timely technical content, consistent messaging, and engaging visuals through social media.
- Support and contribute to the development of content for project communications such as web pages, blogs, social media content, graphics, etc.
- Coordinate virtual events, including but not limited to webinars, technical consultations, and knowledge sharing events hosted by the project.
- Manage the project’s email marketing system, including the bi-monthly Resource Review, external and internal newsletters, and event invitations.
- Identify opportunities to improve internal communication among technical teams, country offices, and the U.S. office and work with the KM Team to develop efficient processes to facilitate communication.
- Monitor, evaluate, and share the impact of project communication, using Google Analytics, surveys, and other tools and develop reports to share results with project leadership and USAID.
- Support preparations for special events, such as conferences and workshops, and support administrative and management activities, such as staff retreats and meetings.
- Coordinate timely review and revision of the budget tracking sheets and support the KM Director in work planning and budgeting.
- Assist the production team in formatting, editing, and any other production needs during surge periods.
Qualifications
Experience: Masters degree in a related field preferred, with a minimum two years of professional communications experience, or five years of work experience without a master’s degree. Experience with USAID contracts is a plus.
Required Skills:
- Demonstrated experience in developing and executing strategic communication initiatives, preferably for global health programming.
- Experience with and understanding of social media channels in professional settings—including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram—and web and social media analytics tools.
- Excellent written and verbal English skills required. Must be a strong writer and able to synthesize technical material into short and concise communication pieces across different platforms.
- Fluency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Google Suite.
- Experience in creating, marketing, and disseminating publications and other communications products.
Preferred Skills:
- Ability to think strategically to leverage existing networks to more effectively share USAID Advancing Nutrition resources.
- Understanding of metrics for communication and experience in presenting data to demonstrate return on investment.
- Ability and desire to work independently and manage various projects in a team setting.
- Knowledge of 508 compliance and accessibility requirements is highly desirable.
- Professional proficiency in French is highly desirable.
- Experience with USAID or other donor agencies and demonstrated commitment to health or international development are highly desirable.
- Ability to travel internationally.
- Excellent time management and personal organization skills.
