In 2021, Food Fortification Initiative (FFI) conducted a rapid assessment on COVID-19’s impact on food fortification regulation compliance in Uganda and cited limited technical capacity and knowledge on fortification processes as major constraints to routine compliance by industries. Domestic producers are challenged by national legislation mandating food fortification, which requires additional quality assurance and control processes to ensure a consistent production of adequately fortified products.
To address these challenges, USAID Advancing Nutrition Uganda supported the Ministry of Trade, Industries and Cooperatives (MTIC), Ministry of Health (MOH), and National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) from June 20–24 to identify and instruct 36 local experts to become trainers on food fortification processes and regulations.
The training included moderators from MTIC, MOH, the National Drug Authority, industry experts and USAID Advancing Nutrition. The objectives of the training were—
- to enhance knowledge in theoretical and practical aspects of food fortification and its application in industrial settings
- to enhance knowledge on regulatory framework and best practices for industrial food fortification
- to draft a framework for engaging trained local experts in the provision of ongoing technical support to food industries/producing fortified foods across Uganda.
Following the training, these experts will work with MTIC and UNBS to provide ongoing technical support to food industries and promote conformity to national standards across Uganda. Learn more about USAID Advancing Nutrition’s work in Uganda.
